Damaged Currency

PRINCIPAL STANDARD FOR DISTINGUISHING CURRENCY

1.2. Banknotes with the following characteristics are considered "DAMAGED" and will not be put into circulation.

1.2.1. Worn

Significantly worn, discolored, or with a visible image clarity on either the front or back surface of the banknote exhibiting a deterioration level exceeding 50%.

1.2.2. Stain

In one or more areas, the surface area is stained with paint, oil, ink, or similar substances, exceeding 81 mm².

1.2.3. Pictures and Inscriptions

 On the banknote, there are numbers, letters, and drawings written or marked with an indelible pen or marker, covering an area greater than 225 mm².

1.2.4. Fading of paint or images

The banknote is entirely or partially stained with paint, the images are faded, the security features are removed or damaged, or it is worn and softened (for example: a banknote that has been exposed to strong chemicals or washed).

1.2.5. Tear

A tear has occurred in one part of the banknote that exceeds the dimensions specified in the table below:

1.2.6. Perforation

One or more sections exhibit perforations with an area greater than 20 mm².

 

1.2.7. Edge Wear and tear

  1. The banknote is missing more than two-thirds of its area, with a continuous tear of more than 2mm either in width or length.
  2. One or more edges of the banknote are torn and damaged, with an area exceeding 20mm²

1.2.8. Corner wear and tear

If the tear corner of the banknote has a short side length greater than 16.1mm and an area exceeding 130mm².

1.2.9. Adhesive

If the adhesive or tape exceeds the measurements specified in the table below:

1.2.10. Wrinkling

The banknote was improperly stored, leading to its deterioration, as it was repeatedly folded and crumpled.

1.2.11. Burnt

The banknote has been partially burned, scorched, and blackened.

The Bank of Mongolia exchanges and replaces any damaged currency with the new currency at the face value.
